Shannon Kent was a highly respected U.S. Navy cryptologic technician and a Navy senior chief petty officer who worked with special operations forces, including SEAL teams, throughout her distinguished career. She played a critical role in the intelligence community, serving as a linguist and cryptologist who specialized in counterterrorism and intelligence gathering.
Kent’s career was marked by a dedication to operations targeting terrorist networks, including her work in combating ISIS. She was deployed multiple times to various combat zones, including Iraq and Syria, where she provided vital intelligence that helped shape special operations missions. Known for her linguistic abilities, Kent spoke several languages, including Arabic, and her expertise was instrumental in helping identify and track high-value terrorist targets.
Tragically, Shannon Kent was killed in action on January 16, 2019, in a suicide bombing in Manbij, Syria. At the time, she was conducting intelligence operations in support of U.S. Special Operations Command. Her death was widely mourned, and she is remembered as a pioneer and a trailblazer in her field, being one of the few women to operate at such high levels within special operations.
In addition to her military achievements, Kent was a mother of two and was known for balancing her demanding military career with her personal life. Her sacrifice and service continue to be honored by her colleagues and the broader military community.
